THE KOINOS PROJECT is an online educational platform restoring humanity to the Humanities: a place for the intellectually curious, but educatedly stunted searching for something more—for a true mythos. Subscribe now to stay up to date on all our offerings.

As part of our attempt to RESTORE HUMANITY TO THE HUMANITIES, we are launching a new series featuring artists that we feel represent the best of what humanity has to offer. The project will include live music videos accompanied by a podcast discussion about the artists' creative process, their inspiration, and the books and other works of art that have helped them to become who they are and do what they do.

For our inaugural episode, we are joined by singer-songwriter Helen Wagner of Summerfield to discuss her (perhaps) unhealthy obsession with Don Quixote and how her recently completed adventure in the St. John’s College Great Books program has shaped her thinking and writing. We also explore, amongst many other things, both the power and seeming inadequacy of words to help us make sense of our experience as human beings. While logos is one of humanity’s most defining features, we ironically find it hard to say exactly what its role is in our lives.

Hear also the story behind the story of “The Canyon,” a tale of star-crossed lovers whose stars may actually be misaligned. It is one of our favorite songs off their new album Like an Old Friend, and has been living rent free in our heads many months now.

For more performances from this session, subscribe to our partner Red Flannel Sessions. Also, follow Helen here on Substack and Summerfield on Spotify, Instagram, and YouTube to never miss a new tune or new idea.
