What is art? — And what is its relationship to us human beings?
Although it has become fashionable over the last half century or so to ascribe the ability to create art to other species, no one serious has ever taken that claim seriously. As beautiful as a spider’s web or bird’s nest is, to claim it possesses the same ontological status as Michelangelo’s David was always a futile exercise. Charlotte did not choose to create her web; that is just what spiders do.
As part of our attempt here at The Koinos to restore humanity to the humanities, we are launching a new series featuring artists who we feel represent the best of what humanity has to offer. The project will include music videos accompanied by a podcast discussion about the artists’ creative process, their inspiration, and the books and other works of art that have helped them to become who they are and do what they do.
We are proud to feature the band Summerfield for our inaugural episode. Be on the lookout this weekend for our discussion with singer-songwriter Helen Wagner to hear the story behind the story of “The Canyon” — a beautiful duet about an ill-fated love and the journey toward that painful realization.
As the much more serious challenge of AI art continues to spread like the plague, we believe it is becoming imperative to not only appreciate the truly human aspect of art, but to be able to give an account of it — what the ancient Greeks called a logos. Understanding why we do what we do will be as important as continuing to do it.
