What is it that grounds human equality—that is, in what way are human beings equal? There are a million and one ways in which we are, of course, not equal: talent, looks, brains, brawn—money. Yet, as Americans, we remain committed to the belief that all are created equal. Indeed, this proposition has now been stretched and extended further than ever—despite the fact that its most ardent advocates accept neither the religious nor secular basis upon which this claim was originally made.
